Ensuring that feet are in shoes that fit properly is essential for growing feet, but is there anything additional that we need to be doing?
Babies feet
Babies feet grow so fast, just like they do, and their feet are a key part to how they start to explore the world.
When it is cold, make sure that their feet are covered, however, shoes should be avoided for babies until they begin walking. When they do start to wear shoes, make sure that the shoes have plenty of room and aren’t too tight around the ankle. Socks can also be tight so make sure to check them regularly particularly as washing them can cause them to shrink.
Just like with adults, babies’ feet need bathing regularly. When drying take particular care to dry between the toes.
Toddler feet
There is nothing better to bring a smile than a toddler taking those first tentative steps! Whenever possible let little ones explore safe areas barefoot. When we are young, we have an abundance of nerve endings in our feet that help us to learn, balance and walk. As such, it is important to ensure that any sharp or blunt objects are removed so no damage is caused to their feet.
As feet are growing at such a rate, it’s necessary to have your children’s feet measured regularly. This will also allow for shoes to be fitted by someone who has been trained to do so. There should be adequate growth room at the front of the shoes but they should not slip off when the child walks. Shoes protect the feet and need to be sturdy enough for the environment. Remember that a shoe that causes discomfort in the shop will be the same once you’re back at home!
